Opera suspends VPN services support in own browsers in Russia

MOSCOW, Jun 18 (PRIME) -- Opera has suspended its support of VPN services in its browsers in Russia after the country’s communications service restricted the use of Opera VPN, a company spokesperson told PRIME late on Thursday.

“We decided to suspend support of VPN services in our browsers on the territory of the Russian Federation in the form it was provided earlier,” the spokesperson said.

Opera said this preventive step will help it “still adhere to confidentiality and security” of users.

The watchdog limited the use of VyprVPN and Opera VPN on Thursday as a response to the threats of skirting limitations of access to child pornography, suicidal, drug-promoting and other banned content.
